Spacedust – Gym And Tonic

Classic French house sound… with a bootleg twist!
A long time ago, Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) wrote “Gym Tonic,” using an uncleared sample from a Jane Fonda workout video. Bangalter gave Bob Sinclar a sample of his work, which was then released as “Gym Tonic (Thomas Bangalter Mix),” crediting the song to Bob Sinclar. Supposedly, Bangalter was upset by this and no longer speaks to Sinclar because of the sample issue. Jane Fonda sued and got some money… but that’s not the end of the story. A completely illegitimate version of the song was re-released in 1998 with the author credited as “Spacedust.”

If you ask me, the name “Spacedust” is a play on “Stardust,” the group which wrote “Music Sounds Better With You” (group members were Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe, and Benjamin Diamond). In any event, the “Spacedust” version of this song is a lot of fun! I ordered the bootleg vinyl a few years ago and finally got around to mastering it to mp3. Enjoy!

House music is all about samples, samples, samples. Like “Call on me” – a massive 2004 hit by Eric Prydz that was once again stolen from Thomas Bangalter (or not)

  2. Allie G says:

French house is about samples, Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard and all those guys never used samples and they were the originators…sampling is an art form, we respect the original copyright holders as musicians by asking permission first. Taking credit for a sample someone else spent hours finding, syncing and producing a track from is the equivalent of turning your back on what you stand for…Bob and Eric sold out years ago trying to get a free ride via Thomas…it’s people like you who support that kind of attitude that have fucked up house music. Thanks asshole for paving the way for the Swedish Cheese Mafia, and all the other fakes of the scene. You’ve once again helped to ruin house music for those of us who have respect for and recognize what it’s really supposed to be about. Money and popularity is not a measure of talent, just look at that douche bag Obama and how far he managed to make it. Go fuck yourself while I fuck your mom you bitch. I have no respect for those who support fakes and phonies.
