Bart B More mixtape second time around

This is very confusing. On Saturday we posted a very cool mixtape by Bart B More.

Google removed the mixtape yesterday stating that the content of the post infringed upon the copyrights of others. The funny thing is that the only way to complain and claim your rights is to write a 3 page letter containing tons of information about yourself including your shoe size and swearing that your soul belongs to Google until the end of days. Don’t believe me? check it yourself.

Here is the mixtape by the way:

That did it, we are switching to a private domain. Donations anyone?

All the best!

Mixed in Key 4.0 released

Ok guys, usually I wouln’t promote comercial products since this blog is 99% non-profit so far.

But…. I’ve been using Mixed in Key for about 6 months and completely love it. The truth is, key mixing gives you a complete new sound as a Dj. Well, it is a long learning process but these days I’m able to make 5-6 minutes long mixes layering tracks on top of each other. Perfect for my Dj gigs at after-hour clubs where I spin lots of deep, progressive tunes. The basslines just float into each other and as long you get the bars together, you can create magic on the dancefloor.

It took me way to long to sort all my records, but now every cd in my create contains 8-10 tracks sorted after Camelot scale. Meaning that if I’m playing tracks in 7-9 range I can concentrate only on tracks in the middle of the label, 1-5 range – the first few tracks and 10-12 – the last few.

Typical Skyjacker Label

Mixed in key 4.o was released yesterday and the main new features are

• Improved algorithm to find the key of every track
• Improved graphic design
• A fast way to create playlists in “Browse Collection” to organize music files
• New quality-control feature: While scanning music files, Mixed In Key detects if the volume is too loud, the song is off-key or there are too many clipped peaks. Version 4.0 suggests how to improve those audio files to make them sound better for a live DJ performance
• Ability to add custom keywords to each track for quick searching

I hope that they really improved the algorithm since the 3.0 version was not 100% accurate. The software is recieving lot’s of support from Pete Tong, Dubfire, High Contrast and David Guetta to name a few.

Check out their site: www.mixedinkey.com
The 4.o version: www.mixedinkey.com/BuyNow.aspx

Enough free promotion. Wicked track by our main man Chris Reece:

Chris Reece & Dinka – Autumn Leaves (Michael Casette Remix)

Bart B More is in da house!!!

Photobucket

Bart B More is on the way up. 1,5 years after his first release the Dutch prodigy is touring the world while releasing a new remix or track more or less once a week. Additionally he recently grabed two spots for best new track on Pete Tong show. Friday he played for the first time in Sweden so we decided to grab him by the head-phones, buy him a brunch and conduct a rather innofficial interview. He was up for it.

Welcome to Sweden!

Thanks man. It’s my first time here and yesterday’s gig was fantastic! What I really loved about the club (Babel) is that all the people were dancing like crazy and enjoying themselves not caring a bit about who watches them. Just having fun on their own and partying to 110%. I loved it.

Photobucket

Your background is a bit of a mystery and there is not much info neither on your myspace nor at wikipedia. What’s the story behind Bart B More?

Well, I come from quite a big family: 3 brothers, 2 sisters. It all started about ten years ago….I was like 15 – 16 something. My brother brought me some of those oldschool house mixtapes. And instantly I got completely hooked on the typical heavy, powerfull basslines. And after that, it just span off. I started to play at smaller parties first and then gradually producing my own tracks. Honestly in the beginning I was a bit scared to play my productions out, ’cause I was worried they wouldn’t work on the dancefloor. But it turned out fine! Since a year and a half I produce quite a lot and the gigs have been raining in lately. I’m touring the Europe right now. Living the high life…Getting free brunches. Huh huh huh huh huh.

Tell us about a general process of how you make a new track?

I get lot’s of influences listening to other genres than house. Lots of jazzy stuff for instance. Sometimes you seat around playing with small jazz sample and coming up with ideas or playing some cords on the keyboard. It’s great for inspiration to listen to other types of music.
But sometimes I just sit down and produce a track from scratch. It may even take just one day to produce a new tune if I’m lucky. But it can also take as much as four weeks. Honestly sometimes you find the right sound just by coincidence.

And the equipment?

I have a midi-keyboard and mostly use Reason. Reason 4. It’s a Swedish software right?

Yeah man.

Cool, great software, please make a note for developers that they should add VST-support and audio editing. If they would add these two things, it would be the best program ever! So basically I just make all the instrumentals in Reason and then load it over into Ableton Live to put the vocals on.

I’m trying to learn Logic as well, but there is lots of pressure on me from all the big artists asking for remixes so I don’t really have enough time to learn new software. It´s more convenient for me to just fall back on Reason.

What do you think about the MP3 revolution, like tunes being downloaded on blogs and forums?

I don’t mind people downloading my Mp3 for free. For me, music is a way to get myself out there and promote myself. To be able to play at bigger clubs and bigger events. I mainly see it as a promotional tool, the more people that get my music, the better. I earn more on Dj gigs than on record sales. Like 60-40.

Photobucket

Are you able to live off your music?

Yeah, these days for sure. I used to study marketing and actually have only one year left. But then I started to get such a huge amount of remix requests, so I decided to work with music full time.

Maybe this is a scary question. Can you see yourself producing and Djing still in 10 or 20 years?

Yeah that’s one scary question. Huh huh huh huh.
Well, I’m doing it 100% procent now. You gotta keep producing to stay on top. I can’t just stop and relax. I’m really going for it. Right now I want to produce as much music as possible cause I really love doing this. We will see what happens in a few years.

You got some crazy stuff occurring during any of you gigs that you’de like to share?

Nothing major really. Well… you always get these really strange requests. Requests can be very annoying, since as a Dj you want to do your best all the time and not be interrupted… on the other hand, you should always have time for your crowd, I always try to answer them polite.

And once I was playing at a party with some live sexshows in front of my DJ booth. It’s weird, suddenly, nobody is paying any attention to the Dj anymore.

Biggest influences?

Another big question? Huh Huh Huh. Daft punk of course. Those guys are so creative. For instance bringing in all those sample from completely different music styles to create their own sound. And the same time I really admire their marketing skills. You know, wearing those crazy helmets. Suddenly disappearing for almost five years, making all the kids on the dancefloor speculate whether the Dj is playing a new Daft Punk track or not. And then…boom coming back instantly by dropping a new killer album.

And! I have to get some credits to Laidback Luke! For starting with the techno scene and then bridging the gap between techno and house. I actually were I am right now partly thanks to him. A couple of years ago I sent him my demo and he really loved it. We started to hang out and started to go with him to lots of his gigs, learning from him, watching him working the crowd. LBL is always up for a party.

Bart B More is a cool name?

Once again Laid Back behind this one. When I saw the name, I immediately liked it. It’s really cool. It’s funny, I have some Baltimore influences in my music, and a l

otta people think the name is based on the Baltimore sound. Sometimes I get emails and myspace messages people saying “really cool remix you did on this and that track”. So the track is named B-More Remix, and they think it is me! Huh huh! So I just write “thank you very much”

Big up! You got the Essential New Tune by Pete Tong.

Twice!

Yeah, congrats. How did that feel?

Really good! It gave my career a real boost, because first my own track ‘So it Goes’ and then a month later my remix of ‘Freak’ got it. That’s when people really started to notice my music, because it’s one thing to get it once, but you gotta keep up the good quality so people see you’re not a one hit wonder.

Like Peter André.

Exactly. I don’t wanna be in the same line as Peter André.

Except for his abs, everyone want abs like his.

Huh huh! Yeah, Actually add him as a major influence.

How does the future look for Bart B More?

Very promising, I hope. It’s already been a quite a rollercoaster ride. It’s only since two years my productions have been picked up so well. It was only two years since I didn’t play out so much, and recently I went to Australia. I’m really trying to become a better DJ and producer. Actually Future Music wanted to make the ‘in the studio with…’ with me, but I’m moving in with my girlfriend at the moment, so temporarily I’m producing music at my parents’ house.

That’s great, man! You should bring Future Music there and have your mom come up and bring them milk and cookies, just to see the look on their faces.

Haha! Well you see all these big artists like Angello sitting in their fancy studios, so I’m not really at ease with sitting at my parents’ house.

Thanks a lot for this, mate. Appriciate it!

Thank you!

Rumours go that a brand new Bart B More mixtape together with some previously unreleased Bart B More Bootlegs will see the light of day on some dodgy music blog called House Music With Love. But who believes rumours anyway?

Thanks to Staffan for organizing the Backlash event and to Jesper Berg for photos.

Interview: Patrick L

KNOW YOUR SWEDISH DJS!

Patrick L lives in Stockholm and has been dropping massive house tracks, tune after tune since 2004. Apart from remixes for reknown artists and a couple of other collaborations he recently started his own label Twerok.

We decided to contact him to find out what the fuss is all about

HMWL: Hey Patrick!

Thanks for taking your time!
Patrick L: No problem, my pleasure.
HMWL: Let’s start with our usual “back in the days” question:
When, how and why did you start making music?
Patrick L: I have always played music since I can remember. I started with the piano then the guitar and bass and drums. I ended up being my own one man band. That’s when I baught recording equipment. I started to build up my studio bit by bit in my parents garage. From there it just grew to the studio I have today (not in my parents garage anymore though).
HMWL: We noticed you’ve been very busy since then. We tried counting all your tracks on beatport, but got completely lost. How many commercial releases have you had so far?
Patrick L: I just counted them to at least 21 full releases not including remixes for other artists.
HMWL: When making music, do you prefer software, hardware or both?
Patrick L: Best of both worlds. You can achieve a lot of surprise effects when toying around on hardware synths. Things you just couldn’t have done with mouse clicking on the computer. It often sounds better aswell. I don’t know why. But it just does. I do love soft synths though. It is really convenient to work with the computer as the only instrument. You can change the sound of the synths at any time without rebouncing them. Very good.
HMWL: What programs and synths etc. do you use?
Patrick L: I mainly use Cubase. I have always used it and its really hard to change to something else. Hardware: Moog little phatty, Korg Triton, Roland XP30, Korg Microkorg and several acoustic instruments. Software: Korg Legacy, PPG Wave, Trilogy, Imposcar and a few more.
HMWL: Please guide us through the general process off how you make a track?
Patrick L: I usually start with making the kick from scratch. You really get the best kicks that way. I like them clean and deep. Then I start to put together a drumloop with other samples. Self made or from somewhere else. to have something to work over. Then the process really differs. It can continue with a bassline or something from the piano or an acoustic instrument.
HMWL: Are you able to live off your music? If no, what do you do on the side?
Patrick L: No, when I started things where different out there on the market. But now I just do it for the music. I’m actually a second year student at the architecture school in Stockholm. So the music have gone from my full time job to a part time job.
HMWL: Back in 2004 you released the club hit Things I Wanna Do. It was remixed by the veterans of soulful house – the Shapeshifters. I bet you were very exited. How did it all go down? Did they found you in some promo basket or did you have to send them the track 67 times?
Patrick L: It was the label owner ATFC at Onephatdeeva that knew the guys. He asked them to do the remix just before their hit “lola’s theme” blew the dancefloors. He knew it was coming. I was actually not so pleased with the remix they did (I payed for it with my royalties). I guess it sold a few more records with their name on it.

HMWL: You run the Twerok records since 2007. How does it feel to be your own boss?
Patrick L: It’s fantastic. But it’s a lot of work though. The time I spend on making music is about 10% and the rest with boring stuff for the label. But it’s totally worth it.
HMWL: What type of releases can we look forward to on Twerok in the future?

Patrick L: This one for example!

Mostly my own releases. But I will also release other artists aswell. It will be everything from electro house to vocal house and techno. It will always be high quality dance music of some sort.

HMWL: Do you feel that free mp3 downloads (to some extent) lower your sales? Or can blogs (like this one) help smaller labels like you to get the attention you need?
Patrick L: I do feel that the impact is pretty good because the music spreads on its own some way. But it does not show positive on the sales reports. I would say that for every 100 downloaded track only one or maybe two is payed for legally. People have some naive arguments that the illegal downloading makes the sales go up. But I don’t belive that. People prefer to get music for free rather than paying for it. Very simple. The only way musicians can get around doing what they do best is to play at the clubs every night.
HMWL: In the club, do you prefer to play live or DJ, and what equipment would you choose?
Patrick L: It is really different to play live with my band Polyphonics and performing as a DJ. I like them both very much. But I feel more comfortable playing as a DJ. I use CDs when it comes to the DJing. I gave up vinyl many years back. It always ended up with the turntable being broken somehow. There are way too much problems with vinyl for me to stick with it. Every club nowadays have decent cd players. So that is my choice right now. I have tried Serato and other similar computer based systems. But I don’t want to have to hook up my own system everytime I come to a club.
HMWL: Has there been some kind of funny or unusual happening during one of your gigs, that you wanna share? (Like a some girl being all in your face for 1 hour demanding to hear the latest pop hit at any cost; or you ejecting a cd during the peak hour, or like…)
Patrick L: There have been a few weird moments during the days. I played as the vip-room DJ at a really tacky club in Stockholm many years ago. One time a really drunk guy came up to me and asked for one of the latest pophits that I didn’t have. He told me to download it and I said, yes I will do that. I continued playing but he didn’t leave. I looked at him and asked if he wanted something else. Yes, can’t you download the track right now he said and looked behind my back to search for the-computer-hooked-up-to-the-internet-to-download-all-the-requests-to-the-DJ.
HMWL: How does the future look for Partick L and Twerok?
Patrick L: Fabulous of course!
HMWL: Last but not least, which are the five tracks you play most frequently at the moment?
Patrick L: I haven’t played at a club since before the summer. But at home I would say that these tracks are most frequently played:

Adam Freeland – Silverlake Pills (Gui Boratto Remix)
Melinda Jackson – Magic (Moustache Remix), I just love this. I dont care if its a little bit too fast and unhip.
Shazam – Pool Party
The Field – Everyday
Stevie Wonder – Ribbon In The Sky

HMWL: Thanks a lot man for taking your time! And good luck with the record Label!

Future Music – In The Studio With..

Wanna know what it feels like to be a superstar DJ? I bet you do. Then click the link.

Superstar DJ, yeah!

Anyway, Future Music is one of the better music magazines out there, at least when it comes to production and the like. In each issue, they include a dvd with one episode of their series “in the studio with..”, where they sit with hi end producers and follow them making a track. A lot of nice hints and tips are often shared. And as you might have guessed, some of these episodes are out on the net.

Check Hybrid make an short and sloppy but awesome break track in less than 40 minutes, with those massive delays and that gritty baseline.

Watch D. Ramirez and Christoph make a remix (more of a remake really) of Mecanique’s ‘Meta’. Loads of nice hints and tricks. Learn about side chaining (which is an essential tool when you make music) and a bit about audio editing. Great stuff!

Part1:

Part2:

Part3:

I bet you can find more on the net, previews online before each issue on:

http://vimeo.com/user660396/videos

And here is something for our Swedish readers: Marffy is doing his last gig here in Sweden this year, before going to Miami to rip the clubs apart! Be sure to check it out!

Cheers!
