HMWL presents: The Henrik Maneuver experience

Henrik Maneuver is a good friend of ours. Since the launch of his DJ career in 1997 Henrik had played at over 500 gigs mainly is Germany and Sweden. Today, eleven years later, the geezer still believes in vinyl and nothing but vinyl. We tried to pursue him to switch to cds or go digital, but with zero success. No need either cause Henrik is big in Berlin, vinyl or not vinyl.

Here is a brand new mixset with a true, slightly decadent, Berlinian touch to it. Mixed by Henrik Maneuver and a pair of 1210s.
Enjoy!

Das Tracklistung:
1. Psychonauts – World Keeps Turning (Audiofly remix)
2. Jürgen Paape Feat. Alison Debge – Come into my life
3. Ben Mono Feat. Jemeni – Jesus Was A B-Boy (TJ Kong & Nuno Dos Santos remix)
4. Wasted Chicago youth – I-Speak
5. Bumper – Never Stop
6. Justice – Phantom Pt II (Soulwax remix)
7. Yuksek – Deladeu 2
8. Junkie XL – War
9.The Count & Sinden – Hardcore girls (Featuring Rye Rye)
10.Blackstrobe – Last Dub On Earth (Arnaud Rebotini mix)
11.Freeform Five – Perspex Sex (Ewan’s Hi-NRG remix)
12.Tv Rock vs Dukes Of Windsor – The Others (TV Rock Big Room mix)
13. Anthony Rother- Don’t Panic (Dataclash mix)
14. Hugo – The Slope
15. Two_em – Manjala (Original mix)
16. SIS – Trompeta
17.Der Dritte Raum – Swing Bop

“Let’s go from minimal house to maximal, and let’s do it in sixty three minutes and seventeen tracks. Don’t panic, it’s automatic. Those Nu Rave tracks in the middle? That old Freeform Five hit? This is The Henrik Maneuver going bezerk in his record crates, without the ability to stick to one sound for more than fifteen minutes the result is bound to be surprising and eclectic. You’re in luck since it’s truly automatic!”

Artist interview: Far Too Loud

Now, let me bring you something really big and phat! Far Too Loud has been gushing out hard hitting EPs, like it’s christmas all year, since 2005. Their technique is to mix up hard breakbeat with phechedelic sounds, a most rewarding mixture. THey have come a long way since 2005, with major festival gigs and features in magazines like DJ Magazine and Mixmag, and music nominations on Beatport including worldwide touring. Damn! Well, I had the pleasure to have a electronic sit-down with one of the blokes, Oli. I also got hold of a massive non-stop-action mixtape. Nothing for the weak, no!

Far Too Loud – Phunkatech Delight (right-click save as..)
1. Tom Real & The Rogue Element – Loud & Clear – Passenger
2. Far Too Loud – All Is Machine – Funkatech
3. Deekline & Wizard – Up For The Posse (Far Too Loud remix) – CDR
4. Rektchordz – Bassbin Tactics – High Grade
5. Dylan Rhymes – I Am Sweet (Matt McCurry & Stephen Cole remix) – Lot49
6. MKM & GBX – I Don’t Think So – iBreaks:Bass
7. m0del101 vs. The RMS – Lovestick (Far Too Loud remix) – Unstable
8. Beatman & Ludmilla – Lizarb The Sad Clown (Plastic Shell remix) – Ayra
9. Hedflux & Tom Wilkes – Basscake – CDR
10. Break The Box – Prostitutes & Video Games (Zubrowka remix) – Breakin Even
11. Pyramid vs. Far Too Loud – The System – Funkatech
12. Vent – Deft Ode – Hardcore Beats
13. Cosmonaught & Satellites – Sunrise (4KUBA remix) – XSSR
14. Far Too Loud – Play It Loud (Broken Robot Mix) – Funkatech

Hey man!
Hello.

Lets’s start from the top. When and why did you start making music?

We have both had musical upbringings. I started playing saxophone when I was 10 and Dom played cello from an early age. We have both played drums too and so before we started writing dance music we both had a wealth of musical training. We met on the Tonmeister sound recording course at the University of Surrey and a shared interest in dance music led us to start producing tracks together. At that time breaks was growing fast and there were a lot of great tracks getting released which caught our ears so that is the route we went down.

Please guide us through the general process how you make a track?

It generally starts with a beat and bassline. Once these are sounding extremely fat we’ll start to play around with lead sounds and other ideas on top. As these develop the tune starts to take a structure and then its a case of working out the different sections of the tune. We try to make our tracks go on a journey so that they hold the listeners interest right the way through. The ideas need to keep coming and developing throughout the track to achieve this.
What synths, programs etc. do you use when making music?
Our main sequencer is Cubase 4, although we use Ableton Live when we do our live show. Pretty much all sound generation/processing is software-based, although we do have a few hardware synths which sometimes get used including Novation Nova & A-Station, Waldorf Pulse and Roland JV1080. We have recently acquired a Moog which I’m sure will get plenty of use! In terms of software we use Native Instruments Komplete collection extensively for synths and sampling and the Sonalksis Essential bundle for EQ and compression. The Audio Damage plug-ins are great for creative sound mangling.
Do you prefer to DJ or playing live at the club?
I think both have their merits and that it is best to be able to do both. Playing live is rewarding because it is all original material and we can have control over elements of the music that are pre-determined when just DJing tracks. The way tracks blend together is different when playing live. We can play bits of one track over another and really play about with the arrangement. DJing can be just as rewarding when you have spent a load of time finding tracks that really go well together and that you think will take the dancefloor on a journey.
You were nominated not only for the best breakbeat artist, but also for the best single in the beatport music awards. Congrats to that! (Sorry you didn’t win though, you should have). Did these nominations affect your sales and/or bookings?
I think the case is the opposite – that the nominations reflected how well our sales had been doing on Beatport. I think it is a great site and we have had a lot of exposure through them. We were definitely pleased to get the nominations for their awards, especially when you consider the big names we were up against!

Could you tell us about the experience of playing at a large festival such as Boom?

Boom is an amazing festival – it was great just to be there, let alone play there. We d ecided fairly early in the year to develop the live set for the summer festivals so that we could give something a bit more special to the larger crowds, something that would really suit the festival environment. We knew we’d be at festivals with a strong psychedelic tradition so included some more psychedelic influences in the set and it was really well received. We are still getting great feedback from the live sets we did at festivals in the summer.
Has there been some kind of funny or unusual happening during one of your gigs, that you could share? (Like a beautiful girl wanting to hear the latest pop hit at any cost, to the degree where she throw herself into the DJ-booth and eject the CD playing for 5000 people. Or the like..)
I remember one where there were a couple of dancers on stage. Half way through my set one of them appeared with an electric angle grinder and started grinding it against a metal pad strapped to her arm, causing sparks to fly 20 foot over the dancefloor. This didn’t last long as the club owner freaked out about health and safety regulations and put a stop to it. Nothing wrong with a bit of nightclub DIY I say.
How does the future look for Far Too Loud?
Strong I hope. We are certainly not short of ideas

for new music. Looking to early next year we will be releasing a second 3 part series on Funkatech, starting of with our brand new track All Is Machine and a remix from Specimen A, plus our own new label, Broken Robot. We will also be developing the live set to include more new material and starting work on an album.

And last but not least, what’s your top 5 tracks at the moment?
Feed Me – Mordez Moi - DnB hero of ours Spor under a different name. This track defines slamming! Still can’t get enough of it.
Daniele Papini – Church Of NonsenseReally simple but really effective techno track.
Rex – Evil Buddha CombNew track from master psy breaks producer Rex. This will be the first release on our new label Broken Robot.
Rogue Element – HiveGreat sounding, clever track from a great producer.
Digital Base – Superfashion (4KUBA remix)Storming tune that shows breaks is still very much alive and kicking hard.
Thanks a lot, man!
Thank you!

Cheers!

Monolythe interview + free track

In case you have been spending to much time on youtube watching Steve Angello’s videos , you might have missed the Monolythe project and their latest releases.

Monolythe are two Mexican producers – Jorge Carrasco and Luis Delgado who, after working on separate projects decided to hook up in Paris and produce some dancefloor crushing electro together.

Their latest release Don’t break it is climbing the electro charts all over the Europe. Funky vocals by Mr Booby K:

We grabbed them by their Myspace to find out more.

HMWL: Tell us how Monolythe was created? Do you guys have Dj careers since earlier?

Monolythe : Well, we started to make music together back in 2006. It was funny , Luis first moved to Europe in 2003 and a couple of years later, Jorge moved too, so in the first meeting we had, we instantly thought, “we should do a project together” and that is when Monolythe started.

We’ve been long time friends and in one way or the other we have always been involved in the Music business, Jorge has a musician career and is Djing for more than 10 years, former artist of Universal Records, also resident Dj in a well known club in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Luis on other hand was the Head of Sound Sorcery Records, the first trance label in Mexico. ‘

HMWL: Describe in short your general process of creating a new track: What software/hardware? Influences? The process itself?

Monolythe : Most of the time we start a track with the drums and then we work in the bass line department, and if we both dig it, we continue with the rest. We always try to put special attention in the sound design area as we both love to experiment with the synths. In the software department we use Logic Studio and tons of plugins (SSL duende, SPL analogue code, Sound Toys etc) and in the Hardware department we use the Virus TI, Moog Little Phatty and Hartmann Neuron. We do most of the mixing in the box and after everything is ready we do a hybrid summing trough our Tonelux and SPL Mixdream mixers.

We have tons of influences, we both started our music careers in the Rock back in the mid nineties and we basically got influenced by all kinds of music from rock to downtempo.

HMWL: How did you guys end up in Paris ?

Monolythe : Women !!, jejeje…Pure destiny or just a random equation.

HWML: What do you think about the MP3 revolution? Is vinyl dying?

Monolyhte: We love vinyl !! but in this time obviously the mp3 revolution is ahead of everything else and we think that slowly the vinyl is tending to disappear , it became costly for new labels to produce and also for the consumer. Most of the Djs now are playing with Cds and mp3 and that is very convenient when you are a producer and Dj and you want to test your stuff in the dancefloor.

But who knows, things and trends come back after few years, we’ see !!

HWML: How does the future looks for Monolythe within the nearest 2 years?

Monolythe :The Future looks very bright for us now, we have our own label now and 2009 will be the year we will start to play Live so we hope to see all of you one of this days in the dance floor.

Monolythe’s 5 top tracks at the moment.
Radio Jack – Material Girl (Monolythe Remix)
Wolfgang Gartner – Clap (Original mix)
Joachim Garraud & Nino Anthony feat.Chynna Blue – I will love you anyway
Arno Cost – Souvenir (Arias remix)
Albin Myers – Ultra Beat (Myers & Sellberg dub mix)

We’d like to thank Monolythe for their time and wish them all the success for the future.
Watch out for new phat releases from these guys in January and check the entire catalogue on Beatport. Make sure to check out Astrobeat and Something to Live for remix!

Peace!

Swedish House Mafia v 2.0: part 1 – Alaa

Since there have been lot’s off talk about the future of Swedish house scene, we decided to make some research on the future candidates. This stuff is purely hypothetical and we hope that the original SHM won’t start bombarding us by angry emails and lawsuits. =D

The first candidate needs no further introduction. Appart from releasing massive tracks as Dust, Why and latest They never learn, Alaa have also have been busy spitting out very creative remixes one after another.

My main man Kevin caught up with the future star producer to talk about this and that:

I’m starting this interview with a standard question. Who is Alaa?

My full name is Alaa El-Bechlaoui and I’ve been producing under my real name for about a year now. Before that, I was more into trance and released a couple of tracks as “Transparance”

How does a day in your life look like? You don’t spend all your time in front of a computer producing music?

Not at all. You should know that I only produce at nights when my family is sleeping. I have a regular job. I wake up at 6, check emails then go to my job. When my shift ends, I go home to my wife and kids, and try to spend as much time as possible with them.

3-4 nights a week I spend about 4 hours producing. So that means I spend maximum time of 16 hours producing each week.

Which of your own track are you most satisfied with and why?

That has to be my upcoming track “Apértife”. This is the first time that I create something that can become a bomb on the dancefloor. I never release anything that I’m not 100% satisfied with but as a DJ, I do want my own tracks to work on the dancefloor.

Edit: Final version of Apértife will be released as “Titan”. New EP, Rhea/Titan will be released on Nellie Reocrdings in feb/mars 2009.

Can you live on your music today?

Not even close. As mentioned before, I have a fulltime job. But I do earn lot of extra money from my gigs.

How does the future look for Alaa? What are your plans?

My plans are to be able to make a living from my music. So I think 2009 will be a very important year when it comes to both my own productions and my gigs. I hope to be playing at bigger house events and I wish that I could get some good festival bookings this summer. I’ve proved my skills as a producer, but now it’s time to prove my DJ skills aswell.

Tell me about the craziest/wildest gig you ever had. (lie a bit so it sounds good ;)

What can I say? I can’t really pick one crazy gig, all my gigs are crazy, somehow. No, seriously, most remembable gig gotta be when the crowd smashed down the table where the CD-decks were. Not that they were dissapointed but there was simply just toooo much people and I just knew that something was about to happen… I had no staff or security near me to calm down the people… the music stopped for about 5-10 minutes, then it was all ok :)

Finally, do you have any yummie secrets to reveal or anything for your readers?

I’ve got secrets! Nothing I can tell you about… haha! But, when it comes to producing, I think drums and basslines are so important for clubmusic, that’s not a big secret but that’s something that young and unsigned producers might forget about. So I wanna give one advise for you, learn how to use sidechaining and gate. That’s one big thing that really improved my sound and took my music to a whole new level!

Some cool Alaa tracks:
Britney Spears – Circus (Alaa unofficial remix)

DJ DLG & Erick Morillo – Where Are You Now (Alaa Bootleg)

Alaa – They Never Learn (AGS Remix)

Thanks to Alaa!
Thanks to Kevin for sending us the interview.

Peace!

CR2 / John Dalbäck Competition

…is over.

And I must say, I’ve seen tons of cool remixes on Everywhere pass by our Soundcloud during the last three weeks (also, some sucked big time, but let’s not mention any names)

If I were a CR2 Judge or John himself I would be having a hard time picking one of the following three remixes for winners in tech/house electro house categories.

Well. I’m not, so I might as well shut up and let you listen:

Funky Bassline

Well pitched broken down electro!

Afterhours material.

Which one will win? No clue. What do you think?
CR2 announces the winners on December the 22nd

See ya!

Artist interview: Proff

Alright, guys! Today I’m bringing you an interview with the new guy: Proff. This Russian fella is heading straight to the top, already releasing on Anjuna Deep, with backup from guys like Jaytech. You heard his songs in last week’s Saturday Mix – and here he is.

Hey man!
Hey!

Let’s start from scratch; when, how and why did you start making music?
Well , my father is a professional musician. He plays english horn , piano and oboe
in best ochestras all over the Russia. And when i was seven , my parents realised that
i can be good musician as well , so besides of simple school i was study piano , sax and vocals.
The first time i heard electronic music when i was ten. It was trance on the local radio and
it shocked me. I didnt ever heard that electronic sound and synths can be used like that at that moment! So i started to search new records and discovering new genres of EDM. And that was the time , when i started my experiments with Yamaha’s PSR520 (simple workstation). At 15 i found local DJ school where i gained skills of spinning records. Then was 5 years of experiments , failures , local successes and expirience gaining. My first experiments was with trance music , but at 18 years my first releases was electro house music. But then i dicide to return to my roots, melodical stuff. So how was formed my sound. House groovy music with trance melodic and mood.

What programs and synths etc. do you use?
Im using PC (Yes , just a PC , not Mac) with Steinberg Nuendo on board. I like all the NI productions , Spectrasonics’s samplers is great as well and many more.

Please guide us through the general process how you make a track?
First of all is to find an idea. The main idea of the tune. It can be a whole melody ot just a few notes. I think it can be anything: Bass or the whole groove , nice pad , or just
some timbra – whatever what it plays. So im searching for that idea. It can come to my head istantly or i can just playin on a keyboard and finding it.
Okay , we have an idea now and we can start the track. Now im going to create a groove. Drums with the bass. Dont know why , but to create a good bass for me is
difficult usualy (Timbra and its rhythm). Then im creating some sequences and arpeggios. Okay, now track is actually ready. Its time to create its form – intro , drops etc… While im doin it , im editing all the parts in the track. When its ready , im converting all the tracks into wave files and paste them into new project. Now i can insert some events into track. Crashes , FXs , Uplifters , Downlifters , Sweeps etc. Then im mixing and mastering track and its ready=)

In the club, do you prefer to play live or DJ, and what equipment would you choose?
In the clubs im playing as a dj , but using some cool devices during play. Im using “Kaoscillator” and 2-octave synth “Novation Xio-Synth”

Sweet! You released your latest EP on Anjuna Deep. Did this get you more gigs? Did you find them or did they find you?
I want to say big thanks to James Cayser (Jaytech) who showed that tunes to James Grant and A&B guys. James Grant contact me when i was on a small tour in Turkey this summer
and i was very glad to sign the tracks for Anjuna. About the gigs , well , not yet. I have a few gigs here in Russia , but not abroad. And djing all over the worlds is just a big dream for now. Dream because i really love travelling:)

Could you tell us a bit of the house scene in Russia?
Maybe its wrong for me to say bad things about my homeland , but its really not quite good with Dance stage here. Most people dont know thier heroes:) For example: Some people dont know what is “Anjuna”, people who know what is Anjuna dont know that PROFF is a Russia guy.
Im sure that im best known abroad then here in Russia. And its only one example. There are a lot of great musicians from Russia best known abroad. Here are some of good projects from Russia: R-Tem , 4Mal , Ivan Spell , Mango , Re-Zone ,Poisonpro, Sergey Tkachev (Pilot) and many more….. And legal digital sales as extremly low here. The pirates have BIGGEST digital store in Russia (just imagine). Also im working as A&R manager in “Freestyle Records” here in Russia. We have exclusive label deals on our territory with labels like Ministry of Sound , Hed Kandi , Baroque (and all thier Chritical Rhythm label group) , Toolroom and many more. We are trying to solve that situation with digital market here, but its very hard and results wont be soon.

How does the future look for Proff?
I hope PROFF project will find its place in the world dance stage. Actually i dont want to be first like Armin , i just want to feel myself at the right place. I want to have a gigs all over the world and to produce the music i like. Hope that would come true for me sometime.

Last but not least, which are the five tracks you play most frequently at the moment?
Paul Keeley – Paper Jet
Starchaser Feat Lo-Fi Sugar – So High (Thomas Schwartz and Fausto Fanizza Remix)
Golden Girls – Kinetic (Tom Middleton 2008 Remix)
Ben Preston – Don’t Worry (Original Mix)
Sergey Tkachev ft. Anna Basel – Two Worlds (Original & my remixes as well)

Thanks a lot man, appriciate it!
Thank you!

Made in Sweden

Today we are giving away two progressive tracks by upcoming Swedish producers that you wish you knew about but unfortunatly have not heard about. YET.

The first one is released on Stockholm-based Sunhouse Records. Sebastian Gudding have been sending us some cool music before, but this track is his best so far. The track was released on Beatport five days ago, and since it’s selling quite well, the guys at Sunhouse decided to give it away to us. Check it! I digg the vibrator and the piano that drops in the break.

Sebastian Gudding – Orange (320 kbps)

Well, let’s move on. Remember Houseclap? The guys from the place in the middle of Sweden nobody ever heard of? Well, the news are their town is still completely unknown for the rest of the world, but Houseclap are back! Here is the new track:

Houseclap – deBaser

At the moment, I’m on the train to Stockholm and the connection sucks, but we’ll be back tomorrow with some info about this years coolest party as well as this years best track. Stay tuned!

Peace and love on the train!

Saturday Mixtape

Alright!
So it’s saturday, which means another sweet mixtape, and today I get the honor.

Today it’s my brand new live recorded (CDJ800 mk1:s and DJM-600) mix, which I’m quite happy with. The tape isn’t perfect, and I will explain a bit about why below.

1. Marc Romboy – Elif (Jimpster Mix)
2. Ben Watt – Guinea Pig (Musical Variation Mix)
3. Sultan & Shepard – Itajai Vibes (Claes Rosén Mix)
4. Slytek – Calyx (Original Mix)
5. Dinka – Chemistry (Jerome Isma-Ae Mix)
6. Chris Reece & Dinka – Autumn Leaves (George F. Zimmer Mix)
7. Quivver – Brothers & Sisters (Original Mix)
8. Proff – Sydney (Original Mix)
9. Electrobois & Interplay – With You (Original Mix)
10. Proff – My Personal Summer (Original Mix)
t. 58:04

When using master tempo you use a technique called timestretching, which basically chops up the song a lot of small pieces and stretch/remove some of these when pitching. In this way you can change pitch without alterning the key. This is very effective when key mixing, but it has it’s disadvantages, which you can hear clearly in this mix. For instace between 14.00 and 15.00 in the mix, you can hear the song is untight, eventough it’s the only song playing. This is also very noticable around 26-27 mins and around 29.00-29.30. This is the effect of master tempo. So beware of master tempo when mixing, because it’s kinda hard to make a tight mix when both tracks are untight in themselves. For CDJ800mk2 I would say that you can go almost to +-3% before some tracks become untight, but with CDJ800mk1, I now know that +-1% is to push it. You can hear the key difference when I got sick of it in the set and turned it off, at 32:21.

Cheers!
