EZLV – Selfish Beat EP -100% Silk (Nov. 19, 2012)

“Selfish Beat” - Funky synth melody married to a classic house beat make the title track one of the standouts on this EP from the Montréal based duo. It’s tough to really put a finger on what makes this one so fun to listen to, but it just oozes good times.

“Good Feeling” - The aptly named “Good Feeling,” lends from it’s predecessor in regards to funky melody and classic house feel. Various vocal distortions make up the majority of the melody which can’t help but make you want to groove all night. Chances are if you ever took part in … Continue…

Piercardin – los Reyes EP [LAW recordings]

Every now and then you come across something that goes straight to the heart. Percardins sound in ”Los Reyes” did exactly that for me. A beautifully balanced deep house EP to be used as well in the more funky as in the deep and arty end of the genre. The title track ”Los Reyes” is the gem in the crown. Its soft and rising with pads and adistinct but smooth bass, but yet with some really punchy rythm production. This 4 track release continues with the layed back ”All I Need” and the brilliant more dance floor peak-oriented Warschaurer Strasse”. … Continue…

Don Disco and Jeremiah – The Whistle Song, GROW!, 1998

Don Disco & Jeremiah – The Whistle song

Austrian house producers Peter Kremeier and Christian Mahringer started up the long time running label GROW! In 1995. About 1998 I got a hold of a brilliant release on above label on which the two of them call them selves Don Disco and Jeremiah. After this they kept releasing tracks under these names both together and apart. The Whistel Song is in this case a crappy title since its neither a song or has any whistles in it what so ever. As you probably know there are also several tracks with … Continue…

HMWL 51 – Statedlife (Selekta Recordings)

“I have never had an urgent need to be famous, or to be adored by the masses. I have always wanted to have my music flow into listeners’.

The whole world might be completely hooked on the new “rock star” status of the DJ of today. Yet Denver based Matt Guilbeau aka Statedlife keeps doing his own thing without believing the hype.

1.Tell us about the tracks and the thoughts you put into this mix when putting it together?

Statedlife: I try to allow my heart and soul to do the selecting when it comes to making a … Continue…

Johnny D. & Nicky P – A Wild Kingdom, 4th Floor 2001

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

Defecteds,  always a little cooler under label 4th floor, released an “animalistically” good deep house track in 2001 that me and many of my fellow deep house enthusiasts since has carried in our bags all over the globe.  Johnny D.  & Nicky P.  get loose on the Brookly zoo. From the release I choose the obvious “A Wild Kingdom”. This is as classy as it gets!!

Herbert – Friday They Dance – Parts Remixed, Phono, 1997

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

Turn the record over and let’s DISCO! The line obviously brings good vibes to any kind of house floor at any time of the evening. The day I got Mathew Herberts brilliant album “Parts Remixed” in my hands, my concept of deep house was forever changed. I do love the soulful jazzy American style a lot but here we had something that at the time was really new. So minimal, so slow and so deep. On my “10 best deep house tracks of all time”-list for sure!

Mr. James Barth & A.D. – Knockin´Boots, SVEK 1998

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

Cari Lekebusch, one of Sweden’s most loved veteran techno producers, has this magic ability of making everything he touches sound so much… “Lekebush”. It’s not hard to recognize his warm kick and bass in this production by Mr. James Barth. So it wasn’t a huge surprise when I found his name in the http://www.hmwl.org/?p=6612 on the back of the cover the first day I held this 12” back in 1998. Alexi Delano (in this case slightly hidden as A.D.) was also one of my favourite Stockholm producers at the time so the fact … Continue…

Blake Baxter – N sync, Disko B 1997

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

Blake ”The Prince Of Techno” Baxter every now and then has some house up his sleeve. This is a track hidden at the end of his tech slamming album “The H-Factor” and its just about as classic as a house tune can be with its retro organ stabs and
building rhythm section. A brutal soul-queen style vocal is added on top from a mysterious singer called Makreta Birdsong. I have yet not been able to figure out who that might be. She has obviously done her stuff before.
